Prop 19’s goal is to allow citizens 21 and older to possess an ounce of marijuana, allow the government to produce, sell, and tax it, and enable state and local governments to establish penalties for the unauthorized selling of marijuana to minors. This bill intends to address the problems presented previously in my blog. It aims to decrease the revenue going to violent drug cartels that operate from across borders and decrease the number of arrests made for nonviolent use of the drug. This would “free up” the police force so they can focus on more important and dangerous crimes. Even though the drug will be legal for adults 21 years and older the penalties for selling to minors will be increased. Currently the police force is fighting a war against all pot smokers, but if it were legal to over half the population, more time could be devoted to stopping underage users. Prop 19 also works to protect the rights of medical marijuana users. Currently in the United States some local and state governments have decriminalized the use of medical marijuana but there are many cases, like Angel Raich, where the police force disregards these rules and Prop 19 would make it official for the entire state of California. The main goal of Prop 19 is to make marijuana legal for adults that wish to use the drug responsibly. The opinion poll last week came in at 48% yes and 44% no. The final vote will take place on November 2, 2010 and I will keep everyone updated on the polls!
I’m glad that Proposition 19 is finally so close to a final decision. I too believe that if we regulate and control the sales and growth of cannabis there would be numerous benefits. Besides allowing it to finally make the government money and produce much needed jobs; the country as a whole would be more open to other debates when they see the positive effects of legalization of weed if Prop 19 is passed. Many other issues like Gay rights and the drinking age could be sorted out quick and efficiently if Prop 19 works.
ReplyDeleteAlso I have never really thought about how drastically the economy would be boosted. I always knew “oh yeah the government could tax it and make money” but it could possibly be a LOT of money. When you think about weed growth being taxed, weed sales being taxed, weed accessories being taxed, new small and large businesses selling weed and accessories would bring in more money, imports and exports could be taxed numerous ways, food sales would go up for sure due to the munchies, police could make money selling all the confiscated cannabis they have locked away, there is soooo much money to be made!
hahaha I must admit, I laughed out loud at your mention of food sales going up because of "the munchies". I hadn't even thought about the increase in revenue from the taxing of marijuana accessories. You raise a very good point that it wouldn't just be the actual weed that would be taxed!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good topic that I completly think should legalize marijuana. Proposistion 19 will be able to show how the public feels about this topic and whether or not it should be legalized. I feel that marijuana is looked at as something terrible in this world when in reality it is just like other things we have that are legal. Many good things could come out of legalizing marijuana and that is what the public needs to find out. To many people are misinformed about this topic and that is why I think people are biased when it comes to talking about it. The fact that this drug is illegal throws a red flag in people's minds and causes them to make assumptions about it before they know the facts. I'm glad you did this blog so that it can help show people that there is also good that can come out of legalizing this drug. GOOD BLOG!!1
