Legalizing marijuana is a topic that is sweeping the nation. Currently, marijuana is illegal in the continental US and a whole slew of problems have arisen in the country; there are increased numbers of people in prison, drug dealers dominance in the market of pot, and millions of US dollars are going across the border due to drug trafficking. There are many benefits that would come from the legalization of pot and I feel as though it is my civic responsibility to inform the world wide web of those benefits. An analogy I like to use when describing America’s relationship with “Mary Jane” is that she is like the United States’ insane girlfriend. He doesn’t trust her whatsoever so he tries to suppress her, but she just messes everything up and goes crazy. Mary Jane mutilates America’s relationships with other countries and the more he tries to keep her on a tight leash, the more she acts out. If America legalized pot the terrible repercussions of the drug would be substantially downsized. There would be less drug trafficking across the Mexican-American borders, drug dealers would not be making BANK, and there would be significantly less people in prison for possession of pot. Those people can be at home making money, caring for their families, and most importantly, PAYING TAXES. Let’s face it, America is in a terrible economic state and although the debt seems impossibly hard to pay off, we should try to gain revenue from making marijuana legal and taxing it “even though it would hardly make a dent in our national debt” (that’s me quoting the naysayers of the world). Not only is making marijuana illegal not benefitting the United States, but it is also against the principles of the wise found fathers of this country. Abe Lincoln once said, "prohibition...goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded." California has a head start and in pushing for legislature to legalize marijuana but the rest of the country is following in its footsteps. One of the main reasons people are against marijuana is because they are uniformed about the drug. There is a stigma placed on people who smoke pot; they are associated with laziness and this negative portrayal makes the general public frown upon the subject of marijuana legalization. On my honor, I promise to help the ignorant in this country learn what smoking pot really does to the human body and how the legalization of it can help our country.
What an interesting topic! I am also an advocate of legalizing marijuana and will look forward to reading your blog. I have pondered many times why cigarettes and alcohol, two products which are known to cause serious health problems, are legal and marijuana, a product proven to have many beneficial effects, is illegal. I like your analogy about crazy girlfriends; however, I doubt crazy girlfriends are as beneficial as marijuana could be to our country. You’ve addressed many problems that have arisen as a result of marijuana being illegal that I have never even though about. Our prisons are constantly releasing prisoners early due to over-crowding problems. Clearing out the people serving time for petty drug crimes would correct this problem.
ReplyDeleteYour brief introduction to the topic has intrigued me, especially with the upcoming vote on California Proposition 19, which could legalize marijuana in the state. Will your blog only focus on the benefits of legalizing marijuana? Will you follow the news on California Proposition 19? While I am an advocate, I understand the opposition many people feel towards marijuana. Unfortunately, our society is not made up of responsible individuals. The legalization of marijuana could lead to the problems alcohol has produced for our society. Legalizing marijuana could increase the number of people addicted to the product and also possibly increase the amount of car accidents caused by driving under the influence.
I look forward to reading your blog and I am eager to learn even more about the benefits marijuana would have on our society, economically and socially.
Jus t like I’mablogger, I can see both sides of this argument as well. On one side if weed was legalized it would be easier for people acquire it and, therefore, there would be a wider base of people who use it. This would increase the number of people who abuse it, but probably not the proportion of people who mistreat it; none the less, there would be more people who create problems. On the other side, there are many advantages to the legalization of marijuana. Like you said, the economy would truly be stimulated and many jobs would be created at marijuana farms and glass blowing businesses. Also the government would make bank of taxing it and many drug dealers would go from underground to small business owners. Also like you stated, medical marijuana has many pros: stopping nausea and vomiting, and helping with MS, cancer, and AIDs. I will be reading your blog quite frequently and catching up on the legalization news and facts hopefully.
ReplyDeleteTo play devil’s advocate: John Walters, the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy said, "Smoked marijuana damages the brain, heart, lungs, and immune system. It impairs learning and interferes with memory, perception, and judgment. Smoked marijuana contains cancer-causing compounds and has been implicated in a high percentage of automobile crashes and workplace accidents."
First of all, I enjoyed your blog and found it interesting. I thought your analogy was very funny and I also thought you brought out interesting points. A few years ago, when the issue of legalizing marijuana was just coming out, I remember hearing this guy on radio say “if they want to end the recession in America, legalize and tax marijuana”. At first I thought he was crazy and he was just saying a bunch of crazy things but after reading your blog, with all the revenue that we are losing out on, maybe legalizing marijuana can help solve some of our financial problems. As for drug dealers, I don’t condone it but I believe with the limited amount of resources that we have for prisoners, getting sent to prison for having weed shouldn’t be that severe. Back to taxing weed, I didn’t think much of it before but now, it’s an interesting subject to talk about lol. Anyway, good job with the post.
ReplyDeleteimablogger- I understand where you are coming from when you say that my analogy is somewhat flawed. I left out the last segment of the relationship between Mary Jane and America! If he would just stop suppressing her and neglecting her she would be totally chill and never act out. My analogy may be a little far fetched...but the bottom line is that the US needs to address the issue of legalizing marijuana and just go on acting as they have been.
ReplyDeleteHouston Brown- It's definitely possible that people would use marijuana irresponsibly if it were made legal. Pot temporarily affects the brain and slows reflexes. I would hope that the same laws would be in place for smoking and driving that are currently in place for drinking and driving...aka it's not allowed. It seems very unfair that alcohol is legal when it affects judgement and reflexes just the same, if not worse than marijuana.
I really am going to enjoy reading your blog. I feel your topic is very interesting and I found that I have very similar views on how you think. I think that this topic should get more recognition then what it is getting in the media. People find it hard to accept that marijuana could be legalized one day and I get the feeling that they do not want to listen because they have already made their mind up on how they feel about it. Marijuana is a drug but the effects it causes on the body could be said are similar to alcohol. The only difference is that you cannot overdose on marijuana. There could be numerous advantages to legalizing marijuana and the public needs to realize this and consider it and see what positives it can bring to our society
ReplyDeleteThis is such an interesting topic to be writing about and I almost chose this topic myself. I am also an advocate of legalizing marijuana and will look forward to reading your blog. I have always wondered how cigarettes and alcohol, two products which are known to cause serious health problems, are legal and marijuana, a product proven to have many beneficial effects, is illegal. You’ve addressed many problems that have arisen as a result of marijuana being illegal that I have never even though about. I have, too, thought about the fact that prisons always let people out due to overcrowding. And they are always the ones who were put in there for marijuana in the first place. Is this because it is stupid crime? YES! While I am an advocate, I understand the opposition many people feel towards marijuana. Unfortunately, our society is not made up of responsible individuals and many would abuse the legalization. I look forward to reading your blog and I am eager to learn even more about the benefits marijuana would have on our society!
